This program provides in-person instruction only.
The Front/Back Office Medical Assistant program will prepare individuals, under the supervision of physicians, to provide medical office administrative and clinical services, including scheduling and patient intake, alphabetic indexing and filing, and use of Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) on pc and iPad (Medisoft, Practice Fusion, and Dr. Chrono), as well as medical coding and medical insurance billing. Students will learn to navigate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codebooks to assign diagnosis and procedure codes, ensuring proper billing and reimbursement. It is also available via distance education and hybrid models with training on how to use Zoom and Canvas LMS. Students also learn keyboarding, word processing (MS Word) and how to use spreadsheets (MS Excel). Customer Service is very important in any medical office, and students will learn to address patient needs and concerns diplomatically, and in a way that preserves patient privacy. HIPAA laws are covered extensively throughout the course. Students will have an understanding of Medical Law and Ethics. Front/Back Office Medical Assistant students learn the following skills: handwashing, Autoclaving (sterilizing instruments), Medical History, Vital Signs (height, weight, blood pressure, etc.), eye and ear irrigation, putting medication in eyes and ears, positioning patient for various procedures, Pap smear set-up, Sigmoidoscopy (rectal exam) set-up, EKG and Holter monitor, drawing and testing blood, urinalysis, urine pregnancy test, culture plating for various specimens, removing sutures and staples, giving oral medications, withdrawing medication from vial and ampule, injections, bandaging, CPR and First Aid, strep test, minor surgery set-up, preparing skin for minor surgery, sterile gloving, infant measurements, and EMR and paper charting. Graduates of this program are able to work in either a Front or Back Office position - they can do it all!
