This program provides in-person instruction only.
The Front Office Medical Assistant program will prepare individuals, under the supervision of physicians, to provide medical office administrative services, including scheduling and patient intake, alphabetic indexing and filing, and use of Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) on pc and iPad (Medisoft, Practice Fusion, and Dr. Chrono), as well as medical coding and medical insurance billing. Students will learn to navigate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codebooks to assign diagnosis and procedure codes, ensuring proper billing and reimbursement. It is also available via distance education and hybrid models with training on how to use Zoom and Canvas LMS. Students also learn keyboarding, word processing (Word 2016) and how to use spreadsheets (Excel). Customer Service is very important in any medical office, and students will learn to address patient needs and concerns diplomatically, and in a way that preserves patient privacy. HIPAA laws are covered extensively throughout the course. Students will have an understanding of Medical Law and Ethics. Graduates of this program will work exclusively in the Front Office, however, many Front Office students are happy to learn new skills, and so can easily learn to do some Back Office work as well, if an employer is willing to train. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics employment publications, this occupation is projected to have 800,000 or more job openings over the period 2016-2026. Potential jobs may include: Front Office Medical Assistant, Hospital Admitting Clerk, Medical Billing Clerk, Medical Receptionist, Medical Records Specialist, Office Manager, Optometric Office Assistant.
